Qualitative research is obviously more subjective than quantitative research. In actual fact it is not necessarily a bad thing rather the subjectivity makes qualitative research more interesting. The fun part of it is that it might be difficult to determine the outcome of ones finding. That is why in qualitative research, we do not set hypothesis and present a prior expectation because of the flexibility involved.

Any thoughts my students?

What are qualitative studies? Qualitive research It is used to answer questions related to the how’s and whys of behavior that are not easily explained through quantitative methods, to investigate topics about which little is known, or to generate theory (Schmidt p.221 2020) on the other hand Qualitative research has nothing to do with numbers or statistics. Qualitative research is solely based on word of mouth from others that have tried a skill and have succeeded. An example of quantitative research in nursing practice is hand washing and how performing daily hand hygiene can prevent the spread of Hospital Acquired Infections. The topic of proper hand hygiene has been investigated and proven through various studies and statistics. Moreover, qualitative research studies are used when there are theories or areas that have not been studied thoroughly. That being said I do not believe that as nurses we do not practice qualitative research. We are responsible for the well-being of other individuals so anything that we practice has to be proven through and through.
