Follow the instructions step-by-step to perform the appropriate hypothesis test in each of the following two scenarios. Submit your answers in a Microsoft Word document. You may attach your calculations in a spreadsheet, scanned or photographed from scratch paper, or typed into your document. This will help me give you feedback. If the results are correct, you will not lose any points for not showing your calculations. If they are incorrect however, I will not be able to point out why the calculations were not correct if you don’t show your work.

Since the sample size is less than 50 in each group, you should use a t-distribution with n-1 degrees of freedom to calculate critical values and test statistics.

1. Use the final row (Day 33) in the first table of “Measured Values” for the following:

  1. Construct the null and alternative hypotheses, testing the research claim that the Acupuncture group had lower average crying time per 24 hour period.
  2. At the alpha level of 5%, find the critical value for the difference of means from the appropriate t-distribution.
  3. Find the test statistic for the observed difference of means.
  4. Decide whether to reject or retain the null hypothesis.

Note: the sample size for each group is in the first row at the top of the table, “Participants Analyzed”

2. Use the final row (Day 33) in the second table of “Measured Values” for the following:

  1. Construct the null and alternative hypotheses, testing the research claim that the Acupuncture group had significantly higher improvement scores
  2. At the alpha level of 5%, find the critical value for the difference of means from the appropriate t-distribution
  3. Find the test statistic for the observed difference in means
  4. Decide whether to reject or retain the null hypothesis
