Nursing Professionalism

1 DQ 1I believe every nurse is a leader, we lead care with multiple disciplinary groups at one time while taking on the role of an educator, an advocate, an encourager and support of multiple patients at one time. As a nurse we take on the role of leaders at all times. A nurse leader will be those who empower others (Grand Canyon University, 2018). A nurse leader is considered an expert in the healthcare field, to influence patient satisfaction and improve quality of care (Grand Canyon University, 2018). Proverbs 14:28 states “The mark of a good leader is loyal followers” (Grand Canyon University, 2018). Leaders are made through the influence a leader has on people. Leadership can influence ideas, common goals, and rules. Individuals follow you not because of a position you are in but because of who you are and how you influence them. Leaders are born, and through serving others one may be called to lead as well.Management or manager is a person who is placed into a position to implement rules, regulations, meet organization goals, and to implement policy and procedures. Managers manage employees and organizations regulations. The five functions of successful management are: Planning, controlling, organizing, directing, and staffing (Grand Canyon University, 2018). A manager is chosen for the position they are in due to leadership skills, experience, work ethic, and possibly time at an organization, just because and individual is placed into a management position does not mean that they influence their staff to do better or be better. They are respected but influence comes with being a true leader. Managers are abe to influence upper management and those in higher up positions. The goals of management and leadership overlap because they are both visionary and think long term. Both want to better the organization and employee’s growth. An example of this is on our unit we have a leader who have been on our floor for a long time and most nurses follow them and go to them for help. As nursing leaders, they assist in doing things correctly by teaching the nurses how to look up protocols and teaching them interventions that are evidenced based. They influence and many of these nursed become core RCs on our floors. Because their leadership goals articulate with management characteristics. As a nurse leader you can take advantage of this overlap to facilitate change by influencing those around you for the change and then implementing the change as a manger. From experience many the core RCs on our floor manage but lead us by implementing regulations but teaching and educating on why these changes are important. They jump in during rough times because they know what to do and lead during rough times while implementing rules and regulations.Describe the difference in roles between leadership and management. Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example. As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap.Using 200-300 words APA format with at least two references.
