Please listen to the song “California Girls” by the Beach Boys and discuss the form of the music. This is the most common form in popular music (hint: verse-chorus).

· Do the lyrics add any variety to the form?

· What is different or innovative about the form in this song?

· Why do you think I am putting a special emphasis on this form?

Instruments are used in most popular music that we listen to today; country, rock, jazz, blues and Latin, are just a few examples of styles that utilize them. However, these popular styles generally tend to feature some instrumental families more than others.

 

Please answer the following questions:

· What instrumental families are used more often in all of the styles mentioned above?

· What would you consider the most important instrument and why?

· What do you think is the most widely used instrument?

· What instrumental families are not used as often and why?

· Do you know any songs that are the exception? If possible provide an audio or video link.
