For this assignment, I’d like you to visit one of the following websites: http://tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations or http://tylervigen.com/discover. Both websites are spurious correlation generators; some of these are quite funny (i.e., people who drowned after falling out of a fishing boat and marriage rates in Kentucky (r = 0.95); anything involving Nicholas Cage). Pick out two correlations (if you use http://tylervigen.com/discover, you can generate your own two correlations). Be sure to write down the variables in each of your correlations.
After you’ve pick your two correlations, answer the following questions:
- Why is this relationship spurious?
- How could these two variables related? (ridiculous theories are encouraged here)
