It is so important to do your own research on the research you plan to use to conduct your study to ensure its credibility. Some times google can be deceiving when providing information for questions looking to be answered. A good way to ensure the credibility in all the research material the researcher is planning to use to conduct the study is by following the ranking of evidence guidelines that has been put forth and were originally described in a report by Canadian Task Force on the Periodic Health Examination in 1979. The authors developed the system of rating evidence for determining the effectiveness of a particular intervention. The hierarchies rank studies according to the probability of bias, RCTs are given the highest level because they are designed to be unbiased and have less risk of systematic errors. The strength or validity of the best research evidence depends on the quality and quantity of the studies being conducted.

These include:

Levels: Type of evidence:

1 At least 1 randomized control trials (RCT) with proper randomization

2 Well designed cohort or case-control study

3 Time series comparisons or dramatic results from uncontrolled studies

4 Expert opinions

On the other hand, the weakest evidence comes from expert opinions, which can include expert clinicians’ opinions or the opinions expressed in committee reports. Due to the bias opinion in the research, the result of the study can easily be manipulated to favor whatever the researcher wants it to favor. The best research evidence generated from systematic reviews, meta-analysis, meta-syntheses, and mixed-methods systematic reviews is used to develop standardized, evidence-based guidelines for use in practice.
