Chapter 1

Introduction

College students are the future of our society, they represent the society investment for future thus their mental health is an important factor not only for them their own right but also for society as they are the one who are contributing for larger part of society. In today’s day in age college students deal with difficult situations in their everyday lives, more often times than people realize. The rates of anxiety and depression are a growing concern in this population. All the while, many college students suffer from some form of mental illness, only a small percentage of college students actually go to seek out help. To help researchers better understand why that is, this study was designed to find out how important it is to a college students to seek out help when dealing with anxiety and depression.

Background:

Mental Health for centuries has been a topic that has been swept under the rug and never discussed. According to the “Medical News Today,” article, “mental illness can affect a person’s daily life, relationships and even physical health.” The main two mental disorders that are most common in college students are anxiety and depression. Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest (Mayo Clinic). According to “The Top Mental Health Challenges,” article depression is one of the main reasons students dropout of college (The Top Mental Health Challenges Facing Students). Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness or unease. Anxiety does not always come from a condition it sometimes can be caused by stress that can result from school work, home responsibilities or work (Mayo Clinic).

Problem Statement:

The problem in this case is college students are not using their resources available to them on their college campus, due to stigmas surrounding their condition. According to the

article “Top Mental Health Challenges Facing Students,” approximately 80% of college students are overwhelmed by their responsibilities, and 50% are too anxious to concentrate in school.”

Purpose:

The goal for this study is to find out how many college students are willing to seek out help if they are dealing with a mental illness. Having a better understanding on why there is a constant increase in mental illness among this population. With the results from this study, researchers will have a better understanding on what to do to help students feel comfortable reaching out for help.

Goal and Objective:

The goal for this study is to increase the awareness of how important mental health is, and how seeking help can be beneficial. This study is aimed to discuss how important it is for college students to seek out help.
