After watching video 3: Sampling I have a better understanding of random samples and their effectiveness. I believe that the examples given in magazines such as “63% of women expect the man to pay on the first date” are not random samples. Stated in the discussion instructions these surveys are typically click-through from the magazine website. What this means is that people who read the specific magazines are the ones being surveyed or sampled for the specific statistics found inside. According to Quora, “The target audiences of TIME Magazine are educated people around the world” (Singh, 2017, para. 1). This being said magazines have a targeted audience. With a targeted audience reading specific magazines and those specific people taking the surveys. The information provided inside would be biased. To have an unbiased represented survey statistics the magazines would need to survey and take information from a wider range of the population and not just the individuals that read that specific magazine. For a survey that is in TIME magazine would end up with a different result from random sampling. This is due to getting a different range of peoples perspectives and an unbiased opinion overall. If you are trying to get an accurate sample from a survey random sampling is an excellent method due to obtaining opinions from a wide variety of the population being surveyed.
