Assignment: Estimation and Reasonableness Investigation

Regardless of a mathematical problem, an answer must be plausible or make sense.

John: “I got 124 meters.”

Mary: “I got 18 kilograms.”

Teacher: “Either way, that’s a lot of orange juice!”

Often times, the error may not be as evident as in this humorous discussion. More often, an error is something that you might have simply copied off of a calculator screen without taking the time to consider what the solution should be.

Example:  Problem:  3.21 • 7.8

Thinking:  3 • 8 = 24  I am expecting an answer around 24 (with 3     decimal places).

  Answer:  40.638

I know that this answer is wrong because it is nowhere near my expected answer of 24.

Do not solve these problems.  Circle whether these answers are reasonable or not. Explain your thinking to justify your choice.
