1.) Use Internet research to write one paragraph about Heron of Alexandria. What are three interesting facts about his mathematical work?

2.)Heron was a Greek mathematician and author of geometric works. His most important work called, Metrica, was lost until 1896. Metrica is a compilation of 3 books made up of formulas and geometric rules. The first book discusses finding the area of planes as well as the formula for finding the area of a triangle called Heron’s formula. Book one also explains the formula to compute the square root of a number down to “arbitrary accuracy”. A variation of this formula is still used by computers today. Book two explains how to find the volume of various solids and book three discusses the division of various planes and solids into parts and ratios.

Heron’s most famous invention was the first steam-powered engine. That and other principles of mechanics are discussed in his book, Pneumatica.

In other works, he describes the idea of an odometer for measuring distance by cart or wagon travel.

Heron was a mathematician and an inventor. Many of his principles and inventions are still used today.

3.)Heron of Alexandria is a mathematician, scientist, inventor and engineer born in 20AD. His specialization was in the fields of mechanics, mathematics and physics. The vending machine was his idea, the idea of inserting a coin in a machine for it to perform certain function was mentioned in his book “Mechanics and Optics”. Heron was the first to make a machine operate with a wind wheel.

  1. The Metrica is a series of three books in which Heron calculates the areas and volumes of bodies suck as pyramids, cones, cylinders and prisms.
  2. “Hero’s formula” was found in this book which stated the area of a triangle with given sides.
  3. He gave methods of lifting heavy objects with pulleys, levers and wedges.

4.)What is one relationship between lines and circles? Explain at least one real-world application of the relationship.

5.)Lines exist within circles in the forms of chords, radius, diameter, and secants. Lines divide sections of a circle either evenly or unevenly. One real world example of lines within a circle is slicing a pizza. The edge of a slice of pizza is actually the radius of that pizza. The point or tip of the pizza is actually a central angle formed by the two sides of the pizza.
