The Ratts (2017) article (Charting the Center and the Margins: Addressing Identity, Marginalization, and Privilege in Counseling) argues that it is not enough to consider only one identity of an individual and that, as counselors, we need to consider the multiple identities and the complexities that result. In fact, Ratts says, All individuals present a multiplicity of intersecting identities, as well as privileged and marginalized statuses, shaped by motivating forces both internal (e.g., sense of self) and external (e.g. societal oppression) that need consideration.
